"Everyone, from the premises staff to the administration office and the teaching staff, has a vital role to play in a school" says Linda Austin, Head Teacher of Swanlea School, located in the historic Whitechapel area of London's East End.
"School Work", is published today by author, photographer and teacher Louis Berk, who is Head of Sixth Form in Swanlea School. Contained within the 80 pages of the book are nearly 100 full colour photographs recording a wide range of activities by members of staff. It is believed that this is a unique documentary insight never before produced in the UK.
"School Work" uses a unique photographic approach to explain how the contribution of staff at all levels and in all types of activity helps to achieve the highest level of performance as measured by Ofsted. In their October 2008 report the inspectors noted that Swanlea School "really is a school where every child matters".
"What this book shows is the important contribution which all staff make towards the success of a large secondary school", says Linda Austin. "Louis Berk provides us with a bird's eye view of a day in the life of an outstanding school as told through the work of our staff", she adds.
"When I approached Linda Austin, the Head Teacher of Swanlea School and the governors they immediately saw the value in what I was trying to achieve with this photographic project", says Louis Berk, the author. "School Work is an important insight into what happens in a secondary school and is aimed not only at educational practitioners but the general public, as well", he added.
