School Work is a photographic account of the activities performed by the staff in an outstanding secondary school. Swanlea School is located in Whitechapel in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, one of the most deprived boroughs in the United Kingdom.
In the October 2008 Ofsted Report the inspectors noted that Swanlea School "really is a school where every child matters". School Work explains how the contribution of staff at all levels and in all types of activity helps to achieve the highest level of performance as measured by Ofted. School Work is an important insight for both educational practitioners and the general public alike. It challenges the reader's perception of how a secondary school works and provides a valuable insight into the processes which are vital for the delivery of outstanding teaching and learning. School work contains almost 100 full colour photographs accompanied by text explaining the operations and teaching and learning of an inner-City school. It will be of great interest not only to the educational community but to local and central government departments, NGOs, suppliers and parents interested in gaining an authoratative insight into secondary education in the UK. "What this book shows is the important contribution which all staff make towards the success of a large secondary school. Louis Berk provides us with a bird's eye view of a day in the life of an outstanding school as told through the work of our staff" Linda Austin, Head Teacher, Swanlea School
